National Poison Prevention Week (NPPW) is an annual public awareness initiative observed during the third full week of March, dedicated to preventing unintentional poisonings and promoting poison safety across communities. Established in 1961 through endorsement by the United States Congress, the campaign has since been recognized and supported by poison centres throughout Canada beginning in the early 1980s. NPPW focuses on education, outreach, and injury prevention by raising awareness of common poisoning risks—such as medications, household products, chemicals, and substances—and encouraging safe storage, use, and disposal practices. Through coordinated efforts by poison centres, healthcare organizations, and community partners, the week aims to reduce preventable poison-related injuries and ensure the public knows where to turn for trusted, timely poison advice.
