Working in a museum environment for many years inspired heritage arts instructor Helen Sluis to learn a variety of 19th century handicrafts including crazy quilting. Crazy quilts were very popular during the last quarter of the 1800s into the early 20th century, and, unlike traditional quilting, does not require any precision measuring or cutting. Crazy quilting consists of different kinds of fabric that are cut into irregular shapes and basted haphazardly onto a foundation material. The patches are then permanently attached to the latter with embroidery stitches, and additional embellishments such as ribbons, lace, beads and charms may also be added. It was up to the quilter to decide the level of “crazy” their project was to attain! Participants of the 2.5 hour workshop will make a 6” crazy quilted block, and all supplies, including a basic stitchery guide, will be provided. No previous sewing experience required, just bring your imagination! Suitable for ages 18+.
