The City of Burlington’s Forestry Department is offering free trees to residents of Burlington to pick up and plant on private property. The tree giveaway will be held from 9 am to 2 pm at the Roads, Parks and Forestry Operation Centre Parking Lot, 897 Cumberland Avenue, Burlington, ON, L7N 3J6, on Saturday, April 29th.
Property owners can submit their request for a tree through the completion of the online form beginning at 9 am on Friday, March 31 until the portal closes at 1 pm Friday April 21st, or while supplies last.

There is a limit of one tree per property. There are a limited number of species and trees available – make sure that you are familiar with the requirements of each species available and that it is an appropriate, long-term fit for the location you have in mind.
Each Species has an associated pick up window as follows:
PICK UP 9AM – 10AM: Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida)
PICK UP 10AM- 11AM: American Beech (Fagus americana)
PICK UP 11AM-12PM: Bitternut Hickory (Carya cordiformis)
PICK UP 12PM- 1PM: Red Pine (Pinus resinosa)
PICK UP 1PM-2PM: Canada Plum (Prunus nigra)
Below is a list of the species available and a brief description of their space, light, and soil requirements.
Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) (PICK UP 9AM – 10AM)
Size: Up to 8m tall
Moisture: prefers evenly moist soils.
Shade: prefers partial shade to full sun with plenty of moisture.
Soil: prefers nutrient rich, acidic, well-drained deep soils.
The flowering dogwood is an ornamental, smaller species tree.
American Beech (Fagus americana) (PICK UP 10AM- 11AM)
Size: Up to 25 metres tall
Moisture: moist, well drained soils required Shade: Very shade-tolerant
Soil: prefers rich soils
Use chicken-wire or hardware cloth to create a small cage around seedling American Beech trees to protect them from wildlife.
Bitternut Hickory (Carya cordiformis) (PICK UP 11AM-12PM):
Size: 15 to 20 metres tall
Moisture: Needs a lot of moisture
Shade: Tolerates partial shade, but prefers full sun
Soil: Prefers rich soil
Bitternut hickories can be planted in partial shade. They need a lot of water during the summer, so plant them in damp soil, or collect rainwater to water your tree.
Red Pine (Pinus resinosa) (PICK UP 12PM- 1PM)
Size: Up to 35 metres tall
Moisture: tolerates a variety of moisture levels.
Soil: can tolerate poor, rocky and sandy soil.
Shade: grows best in full sun.
Red pine needs lots sun and space to grow
Canada Plum (Prunus nigra) (PICK UP 1PM-2PM)
Size: Up to 9m tall
Moisture: Moist
Shade: Part Shade, Shade
Soil: Moist, rich soils.
The Canada Plum plant adapts to a variety of soils, is fast-growing and short-lived.
